The belief in the Hindu Mythology that Goddess Durga was born on this particular day, through Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheswar to fight the demon King Mahishasura.
Thus, devotees celebrate today as the coming of Goddess Durga to Earth from Kailash Parvat, with her divine power.
The day before Mahalaya, the sculptors create goddess Durga’s eyes and then fill them with colors. They also do a particular ritual before this.
History of Mahalaya 2021:
Hindus consider that demon King Mahishasura received a blessing that neither god nor human beings could ever kill him.
After receiving the confirmation of Mahalaya 2021, Mahishasura attacked the Devtas and, after losing his war, were forced to leave the Devlok.
The entire Devtas together with Lord Vishnu were worshippers of Adi Shakti in order to protect them from the curse of Mahishasura.
It is believed that at this point that a divine light sprang from the bodies of the Devtas and assumed the form that of goddess Durga.
The battle among Maa Durga as well as Mahishasura was fought for nine days. Then Mahishasura was killed on the 10th day.

Significance of Mahalaya 2021:

It is believed that during Mahalaya Amavasya the morning of Mahalaya Amavasya, the first ancestral relatives are greeted with a farewell, and in the evening, Mahalaya 2021 Maa Durga descends to earth and remains to bless the people.
Durga Puja begins this year on the 11th of October and will conclude on October 15 by offering Dashmi and Dusshera.
The devotees will also rise early in the morning on Mahalaya to pay homage to Goddess Durga by singing Chandipath and taking in Mahishasura Mardini, and other prayers for devotion.
